Udder Delights debuts hot dog ice cream

Udder Delights

Talk about great timing: I stopped by Udder Delights late last night just as co-owner Casey Stechnij was getting ready to taste-test the Gilbert ice cream shop’s latest creation: hot dog-flavored ice cream.

The batch wasn’t frozen yet, but the yellowish-white cream definitely had a strong taste of hot dogs. Stechnij says he used Hebrew Nationals, and that’s exactly what it tasted like.

I’ve tried a lot of unusual ice cream flavors in my life, but this was one of the weirdest — probably because my brain was having difficulty reconciling the texture and appearance of ice cream with the taste of hot dogs.

If you’re really adventurous, I guess you could make an all-American meal by having a scoop of the hot dog ice cream with scoops of Udder Delight’s potato chip and apple pie ice creams.

When I asked Stechnij if he was working on a relish-like sweet topping for the hot dog ice cream, he only smiled.

Udder Delights, located on the southwest corner of Val Vista Drive and Warner Road in Gilbert, is open seven days a week. Info: (480) 507-3859.

And I’m working on perfecting calves’ liver gelato …..
There’s adventurous and then, there’s just pointless stupidity …….

    Mark Jones –

We have fun in our shop and consider ourselves a “flavor laboratory.” So yes, hot dog ice cream during picnic season, fruitcake ice cream around Christmas and avocado ice cream around Cinco de Mayo. We also have a delicious Vanilla for vanilla lovers and sticks-in-the-mud like yourself, 🙂

You need more ice cream in your life. Lighten up.

Of course a laboratory is meant for experimentation, but normally there’s an expectation of intellegent direction when choosing the subject… The flavors profiles you mention are certainly within the realm of a refined palate … Until you get to hot dog ….. If you feel compelled to deviate to the ridiculous, please don’t expose your folly, only to be ridiculed in the public forum….. BTW I’ll try any culinary creation which is the least bit appealing …

Hope that health department complaint works out OK for you …. Reference maricopa.gov:

A COMPLAINT ABOUT OFF SITE CATERING. A CATERING LICENSE IS NEEDED TO SET UP AND SERVE A PREDETERMINED AMOUNT OF FOOD OFF SITE. A CATERING PERMIT IS NOT NEEDED TO DROP OFF OR DELIVER. IF YOU ARE CATERING, AS THE PIC STATED OCCURS MONTHLY,
A CATERING LICENSE MUST BE ISSUED TO THE OWNER OF THIS FACILITY. IF PROCESSING OR WHOLESALEING, SELLING TO BE RESOLD, A PROCESSOR LICENSE IS NEEDED. BOTH OF THESE LICENSES CAN BE OBTAINED BY CONTACTING ME OR MY OFFICE.

  5. Casey S says:

    Mark,
I’ll let your petty, infantile comments speak for themselves. Although when ridiculing someone in the public forum, please watch your spelling. It is amusing and ironic you spelled “intellegent” wrong.

Again, please, I implore you – eat more ice cream.

Everyone else who enjoys a good time, great service and wants to support a local small independent business, please come to our shop and experiment with us. We welcome all – even you Mr. Jones.

    ‘Nuff said.

My goodness, did we strike a nerve? I do believe that my comments are directed specifically at the topic in Jess’ post …. I would suggest that criticism of “hot dog ice cream” could only be petty, due to the trivial nature of the topic to start with …. oh, and by the way it’s watch the typing, not the spelling (speaking of childish comments ….)

  7. J Johnson says:

Yeah, no kidding ….. sounds like Casey S needs to jump in his freezer and chill out …….

  8. Sammy says:

I agree, it sounds like a terrible idea.

  9. Jess Harter says:

Mark Jones — I’m loathe to remove any reader comments on this blog, but I must say I find it curious that the comments from “J Johnson” and “Sammy Smith” were sent from your computer’s IP address right after your last comment.

  10. Bob Abooey says:

HAHAHA way to call him out Jess!! That is classic dude. Mark Jones drumming up his own support. Hot dog ice cream does sound vile by the way. But just for the hell of it, I would give it a try….

I’m the other owner of Udder Delights and I had to speak out once I heard about the dialogue. Mr. Jones, I support your right to free speech completely. I am dissapointed you chose a small, local, independent establishment to call stupid. Tthen to find some false complaint to justify your actions (we provide take out to our customers—it wasn’t catering).

Typically one reserves the word “stupid” for things that are silly and I hope you in your heart felt that way, otherwise….don’t you think there is enough meaness in the world. Lighten up…we were having fun with the ending of summer and wanted to do something fun and crazy…not stupid. We offer this special type of fun treat for people to get a kick out of and have fun with it. BTW, our potato chip ice cream is one of our biggest sellers.

I offer you a treat at my store on me. There will be a $10.00 gift card waiting for you at the register tomorrow. Let me know about your visit, my email is sherene@udderdelightsaz.com. Take a look around, have some fun, and then drop me an email.

Jess-thanks so much for your support…we really do appreciate all that you do to promote local business.

    Peace,
    Sherene

I grow weary of this, but one last word ….. (obviously I have nothing better to do) ….. not too strange that my co-workers used the same IP address to make remarks after we discussed the posts, eh? …..

I’m all for indy restaurants, and that has nothing to do with the specific criticisms pointed out in direct response to the article …. my opinion is that the world does not need hot dog ice cream, and an attempt to create it is stupid (or admittedly crazy). You don’t have to like my opinion, and I need no justification to share it …… but, there it is ….

In regard to the health department complaint, you will see that I often post information from maricopa.gov (restaurant ratings) as displayed on the quite public website ….. here is the direct link to the complaint inspection (the inspectors words, not mine):

Mark Jones you are such a stick in the mud. Loosen up dude. Enjoy life, cause it’s too short to spend all your time being uptight. And a big yeaaaaaahhh-rite to the whole co-workers used my same IP address to post comments. At least come up with some better names – Sammy and J Johnson – Uh-huh…. I’ve already used bababooey, but you can always go with F Jackie. Or there are the classics like Ben Dover. You get my drift brother. Cheers

  14. Sherene says:

Mark-I waited a couple weeks to see if you would stop by to redeem your gift card. Last night we donated it to a family (they received extra scoops and a couple take home scoops) and explained to them that I offered this gift card to someone on line who felt our ideas were less than favorable. They had a laugh, enjoyed ice cream with their daughter and thanked me for the treat. So here’s to you Mark…cheers!!!

    Peace,
    Sherene
